In Revelation 1:5-6 (NKJV), it is written, “To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” This passage highlights a fundamental truth about our identity in Christ: we have been made to be both kings and priests. These roles are not separate or mutually exclusive; rather, they are integrated in the believer’s identity, reflecting Christ's own function as the ultimate Priest-King according to the order of Melchizedek.
The concept of the priest-king is rooted in the Melchizedek order, an eternal priesthood of which Christ is the fulfillment (Hebrews 7:17). Christ's priesthood is not after the Levitical order, which was temporal and limited, but after Melchizedek, who represents an eternal and transcendent priesthood. Our Christlikeness, therefore, incorporates this principle, meaning that as His followers, we are called to operate in both priestly and kingly functions.
As priests, we are called to stand before a holy God, and between God and humanity. We have the unique privilege of entering into God’s presence without the barrier of the veil, signifying the removal of separation through Christ's sacrifice. In this role, we serve as ministers of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-19), standing between a broken world and the High Priest, Christ Himself, who reconciles all things to God. Our priesthood is not limited to ritual or religious acts but involves actively bringing the world into alignment with God’s redemptive plan.

As kings, we operate as sub-rulers under Christ, exercising spiritual authority not through domination but through service. Jesus Himself exemplified this form of kingship when He said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). The kingly anointing involves influence, management, and restoration of divine order in various spheres of life—family, community, workplace, and beyond.

The dual identity of kings and priests signifies our calling to operate in both spiritual and practical authority. As priests, we draw near to God and intercede for others, standing in the gap for the world. As kings, we extend God’s rule in the earth, serving and stewarding His creation in alignment with His will. Our Christ-likeness involves embodying both these roles, as we are conformed to His image as the ultimate Priest-King.
Ultimately, walking in the priest-king identity reflects the fullness of our calling in Christ. We are priests who reconcile people to God and kings who influence and restore order in a world that is desperate for the manifestation of God's Kingdom.
