Overview The Centre for African Development Research and Education (CADRE) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organisation. CADRE provides networking and partnership opportunities, training and material support on issues of health, education, equitable and sustainable development, capacity building in Cameroon, Ghana and the wider region. CADRE has developed out of a network of individuals in the UK, Europe, US, Cameroon and other African countries who are professionals in the fields of development, education, health, human rights, media and academia. After extensive discussions and analysis it was concluded that there was a need for an organisation that could look at the issues of poverty and empowerment in an integrated and holistic fashion. This is based on the belief that the problems in the sub-region and on the continent in general are inter-linked and therefore would require a systemic approach. The work of CADRE involves research on social and economic issues, development project initiatives with local partners. The initiatives will cover small and medium business enterprises, health, literacy, culture, civic leadership and education. The focus groups of these initiatives are youth, women and the rural and urban poor. The philosophy of CADRE is based on the belief that sustainable development can only succeed in the long term if people are empowered and their leadership potential is realised at the local level. Initiatives at the local level can be developed into a foundation for a wider range approach to strengthening civil society through which effective sustainable development can take place. As an organisation promoting development and education we believe that the Internet and communication information technology can play a vital role in empowering civil society and strengthening sustainable development in Cameroon and the continent. CADRE is presently engaged in developing an international forum of groups, individuals, institutions and organisations with interests in fostering equitable and sustainable development in Cameroon and the region. Development, Justice, Peace and Transformation are the watchwords that guide the work of CADRE. Development that is equitable and sustainable. Justice that is independent and stands for all regardless of status. Peace that creates a stable environment so that civil institutions and society can flourish and Transformation that will lead to a change that brightens the future of Africa’s children of today and those of tomorrow.
